The Reformer machine was originally designed by Joseph Pilates to help add a level of resistance to exercises.
It is a bed-like frame with a flat platform on it called a carriage, which moves back and forth on wheels within the frame. The carriage is attached to one end by a set of springs, which provides differing levels of resistance as the carriage is moved. There's also a foot bar and long straps which can be used by the legs and arms.
It can be used in a huge range of ways to benefit and improve strength, flexibility, balance and co-ordination. The majority of this involves pushing or pulling the carriage against the spring resistance and controlling the movement back, or holding it in place.
The exercises are very similar to matwork exercises but the spring tension will give you more awareness of your movement and make it easier to improve the quality of it. It can also support you in the exercises and help ensure correct positioning.
Exercises can be done lying down, sitting or standing and using all the different elements of the Reformer. Small equipment such as bands, weights, circles and balls can also be included.
Reformer Pilates is offered on a 1:1 basis at the moment in the studio at the Business and Technology Centre and these sessions can be booked in advance.
The cost is £50 for an hour or £40 for 45 minutes.
24 hours' notice must be given for any cancellation or the full fee will be charged.
Before starting any exercise programme, it is advisable to seek advice from your GP or a health professional if you have any health concerns, such as a health condition or an injury.
For the session, you should wear something that you feel comfortable in and that allows freedom of movement i.e. tracksuit, leggings, t-shirt. Ideally you should wear grip socks and avoid any long clothing or jewellery that might get caught in the equipment or damage it.
It is advisable not to eat a heavy meal before a session or to drink alcohol or take drugs. You should also not exercise if you are feeling unwell.
Please bring your own head cushion or small towel if you can.
Please contact me if you would like to book a 1 to 1. Once the date is confirmed, you will need to fill out an enrolment form and either email it or bring with you to your first session.
